I might have posted too soon earlier since this is the training area. Just wanted to know if anyone had an opinion on the best way to self train your hunter. Its a long tedious process and I am always open to new suggestions and ideas.

I've never actually hunted my dog, but she is definitly a hunter. She's gone thorough all the squirrels in the area, and if I don't watch her, her cats will be next on the list. Dogs definilty have a natural instinct about things like that don't they? I know when she is on to something there is nothing I can do to distract her.

Hunter I think that you are all alone out there right now! That's sad! I hope that some more hunters join the board soon because I'm afraid that you are going to leave us!

You know, I don't know much about training a hunter but i would love to hear some of the techniques that you use in your own dogs. I would love to own a dog with the disiciplne that I have seen in hunting dogs. It is really amazing the number and varities of commands that they can follow.

Its just like training them for anything else. Patience and time are the key well, that and consistency. My last dog would always train great until we got to the actual water. Then he would go for all the real ducks rather than the decoys that I threw out. A dog is not very graceful in the water and I am lucky that a duck or goose didn't hurt him!

Do you use the long cylindrical platci decoys that you scent? I always thought that decoy ment something that actually looked like a duck, but it is much more just a scent then anything else isn't it. They guy that I watched train would secnt random things sometimes just to train the dog to go after the scent.
I like my dogs better than I do most people!
