Temperament: The Akita is very spontaneous and docile. A very good family dog who is affectionate with others. This dog is also very courageous and intelligent making it a first class guard dog. These dogs are very faithful and thrive off companionship. This dog should not be allowed around other animals. This breed is capable of ferocity, but with firm training, these dogs can be made into a docile pet. This dog vocalizes with many strange sounds, but is not so much of a barker.
Trainability: Very intelligent, but will need obediance training. This requires patience due to the breed’s easy boredom level.
Health: Prone to thyroid both hypothyroid and autoimmune thyroiditis, immune diseases like VKH and Pemphigus, skin problems like SA and eyes (PRA, Micro, entropion) patella and other problems with the knee.
With Other Animals: Can be very aggressive with other animals. Would keep away from other dogs unless on a leash.
Children: May be good with children of its own family, but may not tolerate other small children. Children should be taught to treat this dog with care and kindness.
Climate: Excellent for cold climates.
Indoor/Outdoor: Primarily outdoors. A large fenced in backyard is ideal for this breed.
Grooming: Will require daily brushing.
