Origin: Britain
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years
Height Range: 24-26 inches
Weight Range: 70-115 Ibs
Colors: Usually comes in grizzle or wheaten with black markings.
Temperament: The Otterhound is a friendly, cheeful, and devoted companion. They are affectionate, smart, and independant with a mind onto their own. This breed is pretty low-key, so they can make a great quiet companion. The Otterhound also loves to roam and sniff around quite often and have been known to carry out a very harmonic, powerful voice when needed to do so. He does not bark regularly, but does tend to snore from time to time. This breed has been successful in hunting racoon, bear, and mink. They are very well known for their swimming skills and can literally swim for hours without stopping.
Trainability: This breed will take patience and understanding to train because of their willfullness. They were not traditionally kept as pets. Best results are seen with a soft but consistant hand.
Health: Some lines are prone to hip dysplasia, thrombocytopenia, hemophilia and bloat. Do not overfeed for it will gain weight easily. A minor concern is elbow dysplasia
 

With Other Animals: Easily gets along with other pets and people alike although instinct may drive this breed to chase small non-canine animals.
Children: Great with children, but can be clumsy at times so should avoid small infants.
Climate: Will tolerate both climates very well, but needs to be kept under shade in hot climates.
Indoor/Outdoor: They are relatively inactive indoors with enough exercise, but should not be considered for apartment life. They do well with large fenced in yards. Frequent walking and even swimming is possible would be best suited for this breed.
Grooming: Medium. Should be brused at least weekly and should not be clipped.
